Eating Late at Night

Posted by Nirmala N.

I've noticed that if I eat a little later in the evening (usually after 8 pm), I tend to feel super hungry in the morning, as opposed to when I eat dinner between 6 and 7. Does anyone have any idea why this happens? I suspect it may have something to do with the fact that your body is working during the night to digest your food, which zaps energy and makes you feel like you need to re-fuel? And also, what do you think is the most optimal time to eat dinner, to make sure you sleep well and your body's not working overtime?

Hmmm. I find this happens to me, too. While, I don't know the reason, I also find that if i eat a late afternoon snack, my late-evening cravings are lessened, and I am not as hungry in the morning. I remember my mom always used to say that her grandmother talked about her stomach "stretching" when she ate big meals, so that then she needed more big meals to sustain her. I don't know the biochemistry of it, but I have certainly experienced that. My guess is that it is due to metabolism, and frequent, smalls meals tend to do the trick.
