
Few weeks back, I wrote an article, “7 Bad Eating Habits You Have When Pursuing Fitness“. One of the points I wrote was “Eating Before You Sleep”.
Then few days back, FoodieGymmie commented on that post:
“hi edwin! very interesting articles u have here, keep posting!
anyway u mentioned that it is not recommended to eat before sleeping, but i read before that it is good to eat some proteins, or milk before sleeping to prevent catabolism, what is your say on this?”
He made a very good point which I failed to deliver on that post.
Most of you might not know this, but when you are sleeping, your body is actually undergoing a state of catabolism whereby your body consumes lean tissue for energy. Sounds real bad doesn’t it. However, as long as you have an adequate amount of sleep (at least 8 hours), 6 small meals with a combination of protein, carbs and good fat, water, catabolism can be prevented.
But then again, since our post is about “eating before sleeping”, I should stick to it. We shouldn’t eat before we sleep. Yes, our last whole-food meal of the day should not be like 5 minutes before your bedtime!
Actually, there is nothing wrong with eating late if you know what you are eating. But I suppose most people would be popping their potato chips. Like what FoodieGymmie has heard from, eating proteins and fats before bedtime actually helps to prevent catabolism for the first few hours of sleep! Stay away from carbs before bedtime though. A few good options you may have before bedtime are a protein shake, peanut butter,cottage cheese or even meat.
