I've been reading a lot about food and health lately and as a result I've decided to make some changes to what I eat. Note: THIS IS NOT A DIET! I wouldn't mind losing a few pounds but I think the most important thing right now is staying healthy, energized, and satiated. These are a list of the changes I am incorporating:
Substitute Almond Milk for Soy Milk in coffee and cereal. It's easier to digest, has fewer calories without sacrificing taste, and I eat a lot of soy products already so this was the easiest cut to make. Note: this isn't a total restriction, I can still have soy milk, I'm just going to make the switch as long as almond milk is around.
Incorporate more greens and healthy fats into my diet. On Monday, I was exhausted and didn't have coffee (but had a few cups of Yerba Mate), however, I made an amazing salad using spinach, hummus, avocado, shredded carrots, and feta. It was wonderful! It also had enough protein and fat to power me through a two hour Aikido class on less than 4 hours sleep!
In terms of bread (which I love), I am going to strive to buy only bread without preservatives or unnecessary sugar. Whole wheat will be my first choice.
Dairy is something that is hard for me to eat. I don't drink cow's milk and I only eat ice cream about once every month at the most. In terms of cheese, I keep feta in the house but I do like gouda and parmesan....I figure, if I'm going to eat it, it's going to be super good or it's not worth it.
Lastly, when I am on campus, I will be visiting Jamba Juice a lot more often. They have low cal but filling smoothies, they list all their ingredients, and they have these new fruit and granola bowls that rock! I used to really dislike smoothies but now I crave them (I think it has something to do with the hot weather). I don't advocate a high calorie smoothie or excess sugar so watch out for the Chocolate or Peanut Butter Moo'd and other excessively caloric and fatty shakes. I probably would not rely on Jamba so often except that UH is terrible when it comes to veggie food. Govinda's, a vegan cafe, used to be the bomb! Now, it's all watered down or greasy.
