Eat Your Fish

Posted by Jane N.

Your fun, finned friends are very good for you. Even if you claim to dislike fish, there are so many different varieties perhaps you just haven’t found your “flavor” yet. I was very reluctant to try any raw fish at sushi restaurants due to some preconceived notion that it would be horrible, but I was delighted to find I loved it!

Why do I so highly suggest fish? Fish provide:

• Omega 3 fatty acids: These essential fatty acids (meaning the body needs us to get them through the diet) do many wonderful things for us, such as:

• Protects your heart from heart disease

• Lowers triglycerides (main form of fat in the diet)

• Lowers blood pressure

• Prevents blood clots

• Protects from irregular heartbeats

• Eases inflammation

• These omega 3fatty acids are especially present in salmon, mackerel and sardines

• High Quality Protein: Fish provide generous amounts of complete, high quality protein. This means it contains all the essential amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) in relatively good amounts.

• Calcium: Small fish with bones, such as sardines, can be a great and surprising source of calcium.

The American Heart Association sings fish praises, and recommends fish in a healthy, balanced diet.

Unfortunately fish do contain small amounts of a toxin called mercury. There has been a lot of concern over this issue, but put your fears to rest. Commercial fishing is regulated and mercury content is monitored. For most of us it’s entirely safe to eat 2 servings or 12oz of fish a week. But because mercury is still slightly present it’s recommended that young children, pregnant women, and lactating women avoid fish. There is generally more mercury in marlin, shark, king mackerel and swordfish.

As gross as it may sound, I love eating canned salmon WITH the bones. When I was little I didn't know what they were exactly, but always fished (no pun intended...well, maybe) them out. I realize now it's a bit gross cause my boyfriend insists on telling me so.
