Eat Live Be for a better 2011.....How I stay motivated to work out.

Posted Jan 17 2011 10:57am
This is week two of Eat, Live, Be for a better 2011, started by Joanne at Eats Well with Others .  Each week we write about a specific topic and this weeks topic is how we stay motivated to work out, even in winter weather (or for us in Florida, the dead of summer).

For some reason this one took a lot of thought....what IS it that motivates me to put working out as a top priority?  Go to the gym at lunch even when I don't feel like it?  (Which is a lot of times.  Who wouldn't prefer to go have a tasty lunch made for them and have conversation with great friends?)

Here is what I came up with....

1) Habit:  Those days when I'm at work and it's freezing out the last thing I feel like doing is braving the cold (or the 100+ degree temps of summer) to get to the gym to work out, the only thing that gets me there is habit.  I've worked out as long as I can remember which probably started with my Dad who has always been very disciplined with eating well and working out.  He did a lot of yoga while I was growing up and was active with fishing and camping.

Here he is with his funky goatee stage

My key to keeping up the habit is to not miss a workout unless I absolutely have to.  When I was pregnant and was told to take it really easy I would simply walk on the treadmill just to keep that habit up even if I wasn't building a ton of muscle or burning huge amounts of calories.  I considered it almost a place holder for after I had the baby.  I wouldn't have to reform that habit.

2) How I feel physically and mentally:  This is mainly why I love power yoga.  It's one of the only times I'm not thinking about the meeting I have next Tuesday or what to make for dinner, I'm just "being".  Probably because I'm so focused on the "energy" (as my yoga teacher calls it) in that left leg we've been lunging on for however many minutes.  Afterwards I feel relaxed and wonderful.

3) Who am I kidding....How I look:  Who doesn't like to look toned and, not just fit into their pants, but look damn good doing it?  I think enough said on this one.

4) Change things up: When I get really bored with what I'm doing I try something new.  I've done Body Pump, Aerobics, Bosu, Yoga, Running, Swimming, Walking, Weights, Cardio equipment, Pilates, Yogalates, Gymnastics, Ice Skating, Roller Skating, Volleyball and just anything that keeps me active in general.

What keeps you motivated?
