Drinking Alcohol Leads to Decrease in Brain Volume

Posted by Nirmala N.

By now you've probably heard about all the studies that promote drinking alcohol moderately to reduce the risk of heart disease. Be that as it may, scientists from the American Academy of Neurology in Boston say that even moderate drinking can shrink brain cells. Lead researcher Carol Ann Paul says there's a negative correlation between alcohol consumption and total brain volume. Researchers found that when people drink on a regular basis, their brain volume decreases, compared to those who never drink. Her team also found that brain volume decreased 0.25 percent for every increase in drinking, and brain shrinkage was slightly greater in female than male drinkers, since women are more sensitive to alcohol in general and absorb it more quickly.
