Ditch Fad Diets and Stay Young

Posted by Nirmala N.

Instead of resolving to lose weight or turn back the wheels of time with the help of yo-yo diets, eat a balanced diet of unsaturated fats, proteins, fruits and vegetables. "Healthy fats and proteins can be found in free-range meats, fish that are toxin-free, and foods like nuts and olives," Sangeeta Krishnan, M.D., a registered dietitian practicing in Atherton, Calif., said. Studies show that premature skin aging is more prevalent among people who eat a lot of sugary foods. People who eat predominantly fruits and vegetables are less prone to wrinkles. "Green leafy vegetables are preventive agents against sun damage," Krishnan said. Fruits and veggies with antioxidants - including berries and leafy vegetables - fight free-radical damage, keeping skin looking younger and healthier. Michael McDonnell, M.D., a dermatologist in Palo Alto, Calif., recommends a diet rich in beans and olive oil for patients with problem skin. "Skin that's stressed out generally reflects some kind of nutritive deficiency," he said. "Skin that's overly dull or congested is prone to cellular damage, but monounsaturated fats - like olive oil - can resist that kind of damage." Omega-3 fatty acids are also essential to keeping skin young and healthy. "Omega-3 sources like fish oil, salmon and linseed oil are a must," McDonnell said.
