Dinner and A Walk Through Mohegan Sun

Posted Feb 05 2013 7:30am

Oh hey there! Did you guys enjoy the Super Bowl weekend? I feel like Monday should have been a holiday so I could recover from all the excitement. I didn’t even drink and I woke up on Monday with a Super Bowl Hangover. Maybe too much Beyonce?!

Last week I told you all about the wine wonder that is the Sun WineFest at Mohegan Sun casino in Connecticut. Despite what it looked like, I did manage to do more than just drink.

Mohegan Sun is HUGE. Seriously. It is the 2nd largest casino in the country and it feels like it after walking from one side to the other a few times. Easy way to work off those drinks you suck down while gambling, right?!

Fortunately the Mohegan Hotel is located centrally within the casino so it easy to eat, shop and gamble then just pop into your room for a quick cat nap.

The hotel is 34 stories high with some lovely views. There is a spa and pool located in there somewhere, but I didn’t get a chance to check those out.  If they are as nice as the rooms were then I’m sure they would be worth a visit. Maybe next time?!

My room

I have to make note that guest services at this hotel were the nicest folks. We had arrived earlier in the day for the WineFest and our room wasn’t available for check-in yet. We simply left our bags with guest services and once we had checked in they had our bags to our room in less than 5 minutes. It was so easy and no hassle.

In between sipping on some beer and wine, we explored the whole place. There are three casinos, about 30 different places to eat, a ton of shops, and a huge arena. The casino and hotel both have a Native American style throughout with lots of natural looking elements to it.

Mohegan Sun Arena- I’ve never been to the arena, but several of my friends have for some great concerts and sporting events.

I adore Chihuly sculptures and I loved the way the lighting on this one changed throughout the day. It looked different every time we walked past it.

It even looks different after the photographer has had a few sips of wine at the WineFest. ;)

There were so many places to choose from to eat on Sunday night, but I ended up making reservations at Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse . Before our dinner we did a little exploring of a few other restaurants.

I’m a sucker for a Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville . They always have the most fun interior decorations. This one didn’t disappoint with a life size boat in the middle of the restaurant that served as the dining tables. You could actually sit down to eat and still yell, “I’m on a boat!”

By the time dinner rolled around after the Bubbles & Bon Bon event , I was starving. As we rolled over to MJ’s I spotted these huge signs that had quotes from MJ himself. Hmm…these seem like quotes that I could probably stand to look at every now and then.

I didn’t get a pic of the interior of the restaurant, but it had the traditional steakhouse feel but with a modern twist. Mood lighting everywhere with deep red booths, but on a larger scale. Everything extended into the ceiling to give the room a larger feel.

We started with the Caesar Salad. I mentioned I was going to split the salad and they brought it out pre-split for us on two plates. I love when restaurants do that. Its such a simple gesture that lets me know that my server was really listening.

Since I had sipped and slugged my way through the WineFest I decided to go easy on the bread basket and didn’t enjoy any of that. We went straight for the main deal.

Skirt Steak with salsa verde, parmesan cheese and charred lemon. A huge portion that was cooked perfectly. The charred lemon added just the right touch of flavor.

Carmelized Sea Scallops with butternut squash puree and smoked almond relish. The scallops were perfect and the crispy sage was a nice touch. I wish the almond relish would have had a bit more smoked almond flavor though. I wasn’t quite sure what it was but enjoyed the bits of crunch with what would have been a soft dish without it.

Grilled Corn-Off-the-Cob with Smoked Chile Butter. This side was big enough to split between 4 people. I was hoping for some smoked chile flavor, but I detected almost none. MJ’s doesn’t seem to have the smoked flavors like I was expecting. It was grilled perfectly though with a few crunchy bits here and there. I love grilled corn!

Our server could not have been nicer and attentive. Our whole experience was really relaxing and just lovely. I would definitely recommend MJ’s!

After dinner I wanted to walk around and check out the sights. People were starting to come in to do a little night gambling and go to the nightclub. This means ridiculously high heels and extremely inappropriate outfits. I was too tired and too old to do any clubbing myself, but I do love some people watching.  The busy spot was this awesome lounge hidden inside a big rock!

Near the end of the night I lost a couple of bucks to good ol’ Judge Judy. She did me wrong. $$$

The next morning I woke up to weather reports of an ice storm straight on its way through Connecticut to Boston. It was hard to imagine since I was all snuggly in the uber comfortable hotel bed. Sigh…

I had plans of a visit to the Mystic Aquarium, but they were quickly squashed (again!). I’ll make it there one day!

That wraps up my time at Mohegan Sun. It was a short trip but I managed to pack it full of all kinds of goodies. It was a quick trip from Boston so I will definitely be making my way down there again soon!

I hope you guys are having a good week! See ya tomorrow!

Are you a big gambler? Do you enjoy casinos?

*Just a note: Accommodations were provided to me free of charge by Mohegan Sun. I paid for dinner (and my shopping) all on my own. As always, my opinions are my own!
