Dietary Supplements: Can They Be Dangerous?

Posted Oct 02 2008 3:12pm

Journalist Jane Brody's latest "Personal Health" column in the New York Times, raises interesting points about dietary supplements. At high doses or in combination with other supplements and certain drugs, she asserts, they can be harmful.

For example, Brody writes that research links eating foods rich in antioxidants like vitamin A or E to improved health, but clinical trials show that people taking them in supplement form suffer higher death rates. (She didn't specify what studies or clinical trials or where they were published, though.)

I guess the best solution is to eat your fresh vegetables, then!
