Diet and Politics

Posted by Tamar F.

National and world policies aside, it seems like the presidential candidates are talking more about their weight than ever before. When I was a kid, I don’t recall Richard Nixon speaking about fat or calories. I was absolutely amazed when I heard Hillary Clinton admit that she’s “tried every diet out there,” including the Grapefruit diet, the soup diet, etc. Her weight certainly goes up and down. Probably, she’s not getting too much exercise; I never saw her jogging with Bill in those video clips in front of the White House.

I’m also fascinated by Mike Huckabee’s dramatic weight loss while Governor of Arkansas. He even took steps to get the whole state onto a healthier life plan. The citizens balked – this is the land of deep fried cheesecake, after all. Reportedly, it was hard for Gov. Huckabee to be around all the rubber chicken dinners, so he would eat at a different time and carry around a bottled water. He started moving and has been running in marathons! I enjoy a Cinderella story such as this – I can’t get into some of these boat and horse set folks who have always been toned and coordinated.

I know what you're saying - there are some people who simply look wealthy. And typically, they are. There has to be some sort of study on this set to explain what on earth that "I'm richer than Madonna and you can tell just by looking at me". If anyone knows the secret to this, by all means, let me know. I'd like to raise my tax bracket.
I think it is great to hear politicians talk about health issues like diet and exercise. Hilary is a wee bit more "human" having fallen for the grapefruit diet. :-) I think politicans also have an opportunity and responsibility to use their celebrity to bring these critical issues to our attention. Maybe someday getting elected will require our leaders to be models of healthy lifestyles (diet and exercise). It is actually one thing Bush may actually do right. :-)
