According to German researchers at the University Hospital of Cologne, dark chocolate and other cocoa-rich products could help to lower high blood pressure. The report, which covered ten studies on cocoa with 173 participants, and five tea studies with 343 participants, suggests that flavonoids are the compounds that offer the benefits. According to Dr. Dirk Taubert, regular consumption of flavonoid-rich cocoa products like dark chocolate could help to lower blood pressure, provided there is no gain in overall calorie intake. However, says Taubert, "To date, it's not known whether long-term intake of small habitual amounts of cocoa, such as a small bar or piece of chocolate per day, may also cause significant blood pressure effects."
I love dark chocolate and so it wasnt difficult for me to decide to try this treatment for my mildly high blood pressure in conjunction with my medication. I added a square or two of dark chocolate in my diet each day.
Unfortunately it hasnt worked for me just yet. My blood pressure is the same as it was before I started. I'm going to persist though for another few months and see if it is something that will show in the long term, and quite frankly its the most pleasurable treatment I have ever tried :)
