Cut the Cold Cuts

If you eat a lot of cold cuts, bacon, and/or sausage, not only are you possibly clogging your arteries, you may also be upping your risk for emphysema and other illnesses related to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. A study by Columbia University says that nitrates are to blame. These nasty additives are pumped into meat products as a preservative, anti-microbial agent and color fixative, and when added generate reactive nitrogen species that may cause damage to the lungs. Better options: Tuna, peanut butter, and “veggie” bacon and sausage.
