Anyone who’s ever tried to find something to eat while on the road knows: gas station convenience stores are vast wastelands of inedible junk. You can fill up your tank, but if you’re looking to fill your stomach (with something healthy, anyway), you’re out of luck.
That’s beginning to change, reports the LA Times . In an effort to boost profits, some gas stations are now selling - gasp! - real food. At certain places, hungry travelers now have options beyond Pringles, Cheetos, and that dismal little Burger King franchise in the corner of the store.
Those of us in rural areas are already familiar with the town general store/filling station, where you can get a made-to-order deli sandwich or a container of homemade pasta. Now urban gas stations are following suit, offering burritos, salads, and paninis made right in the store.
Well, it’s a notch above a fast-food burger, and several notches above packaged Hostess cupcakes, which are usually the only things to eat in a place like this. It would be even nicer to find a vegetable stir-fry or homemade soup, but one step at a time.
If you’re on the road this holiday weekend, safe driving and healthy eating!
