Oh chocolate and peanut butter. It may not have been love at first bite, but you’re growing on me. I know I said I’ve never really been a fan, but lately I think I’m getting there.
This fudge sauce may be part of the cause. Just three simple ingredients – bittersweet chocolate, natural peanut butter, and whipping cream, and you have a sauce that rivals anything you’d find at an ice cream shop. It’s like a peanut butter cup in sauce form.
I recently made this for an “adult” ice cream social I went to (Read: sundaes and cocktails, genius!) and it was fantastic over vanilla ice cream, but would be easily heavenly over dark chocolate or banana ice cream. It’s also great as a dipper for fresh fruit, in case you’re looking for something a bit healthier to balance out the richness of the sauce. But I personally think it’s worth enjoying over ice cream, even if that does mean a little extra gym time. This also seems like the kind of stuff that could take the edge off a bad day or an emotional breakup. Not that I’m suggesting you eat your feelings. But it is certainly cheaper than therapy and less troublesome than alcohol.
Chocolate Peanut Butter Sauce
-1 3/4 cups heavy whipping cream
-8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped
-1/4 cup creamy natural peanut butter
Heat the cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it begins to bubble around the edges. Turn off the heat and add the chocolate. Cover the pan and let sit for 5 minutes. Add peanut butter and whisk until smooth.
Let cool slightly and serve. It can be reheated later using a double boiler or more conveniently, the microwave.
