Chocolate Out of Sight is Easier to Resist

Posted Dec 18 2008 8:13pm

Wanna know how to pass up those tempting chocolates?

Just keep that chocolate out of sight and as far away as possible.

Indeed, researchers from Cornell University and the University of Illinois-Champaign found that women:

  • Ate nearly twice as many Hershey Kisses when the candy was in clear containers on their office desks (7.7 pieces per day) than when the candy was kept in opaque jars where they couldn't be seen (4.6 pieces per day).
  • Consumed more chocolate -- 5.6 Kisses a day -- when the candy was visible in clear containers placed six feet away from their desks compared with 3.1 chocolates a day when the candy was in a non-translucent jar.

I already wrote about this study previously after it was presented at a meeting of the North American Society for the Study of Obesity this fall, but since the holidays are fast approaching and the Los Angeles Times just wrote about this, it seems appropriate to remind you of ways to curb your chocolate nibbling at work.

So, what's the take-home message?

"If we want to reduce our consumption of sweets, we should keep them out of sight and inconvenient," said James Painter, professor of nutrition at Eastern Illinois University and a co-author of the study.
