Chicken Stir Fry Recipe (organic & sugar free) for Chinese New Year

Posted Jan 19 2012 2:00am

Chinese Stir Fry is one of my all time favorite dishes. My husband used to eat out Chinese at least once a week. But after one look at all of the ingredients that are many times used we just couldn’t do that to our bodies anymore. Now I’m not saying don’t eat Chinese – I’m just saying – eat some healthy Chinese.

With Chinese New Year coming up in a few days I wanted to share this great recipe. It’s tastes just like some of the really good dishes I’ve had in Chinese restaurants – but without the MSG, chemicals or sugars.

But first wanted to share my funny experience of cultural eating.

I had a friend in college who used to be a chef in Peking. We would all take turns cooking together. At his place I was never sure what to expect. It was my first experience with authentic Chinese food (not the restaurant kind). So clumsily I learned how to use chopsticks correctly. Of course there was many attempts where the noodles landed on the floor or ceiling. One time he brought out a small jar of something black. It was a condiment so I decided to give it a try. Some things should come with a warning label – if you can’t read me (or it’s in another language) CAUTION. Of course no one stopped me so I placed a large glob on my plate and took a bite with my food. Only to realize it was hot. When I say hot, I mean burn your mouth, crying buckets, can’t talk for an hour HOT! Who knew Chinese food could be spicy? Then I proceeded to gulp large amounts of water – which of course only made it worse – but again – NO ONE TOLD ME! I must have been the comedy act for the evening because everyone just waited to see what I might do next. Whew – what an experience. Now I’ll try pretty much anything that doesn’t eat me first but I do sometimes ask for a bit of explanation up front – lesson learned girl!

There is NO hot spices in this recipe – just some great American style Chinese – ahhh.  But if you get the urge here is a link to a recipe (if you dare!) for what I had: Asian Fermented Black Bean Sauce at  Cook Asian Food.com.

Chicken Stir Fry:

  • 1 pound organic chicken cut into 1” pieces
  •  2 Tbsp arrowroot
  •  ½ tsp garlic powder
  •  ¼ tsp ginger
  •  ¼ cup organic soy sauce
  •  ¼ cup chicken broth
  •  ¼ cup onions, chopped
  •  ¼ tsp paprika
  •  2 Tbsp grape seed oil
  •  4 cups fresh organic vegetables, chopped (you can use any combination of zucchini, summer squash, mushrooms, peppers, snow peas or broccoli – whatever is in season is going to be best.
  •  2 Tbsp sesame seeds

Mix arrowroot, garlic powder and ginger.  Add chicken and toss.
In separate bowl combine soy sauce, chicken broth, onions, and paprika. Set aside.
Heat 1 tab oil in wok or large skillet (on high).  Add vegetables and stir-fry until tender (apx 7 minutes).
Remove from pan. Add 1 tab oil and cook chicken until no longer pink.
Add soy sauce mixture. Bring to boil and cook until slightly thickened.
Return vegetables and combine.  Sprinkle with sesame seeds.

Have fun celebrating Chinese New Year on the 23rd. It’s the year of Dragon – rahhh!  So being a home school mom I had to include a link to some fun crafts and ideas that you can enjoy with the whole family.  Including Paper Lanterns and a Dancing Dragon .  Thanks to Enchanted Learning  for sharing.

Do you have plans for Chinese New Year?  How are you celebrating – share your thoughts with us.  It makes it so much fun to see what everyone does.
