Dr. Alessio Fasano and his Center for Celiac Research at the University of Maryland Medical Center this week received a $45 million donation from a patient to find new treatments and potentially a cure for celiac disease.
The donation marks the largest single gift ever given to the university system and was provided by a grateful family from Indiana. Dr. Fasano said the money will be used to build a one-of-a-kind research institute that will eventually employ 200 physicians and research scientits. They will look to study celiac disease, as well as look as how the condition is related to other autoimmuned conditions such as type 1 diabetes, multiple sclerosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
