Can you force someone to get help?

Posted by help4mysister

I just found out recently my younger sister is suffering from bulimia. I caught her purging after dinner. She claims she has been doing for months. Now she is refusing to get help. She is only 16. How could I force her to go to a therapist? Ive tried talking, now she just denies the fact that she has a problem at all. She is trying to convince me that she no longer purges. Ive made appointments for her but I cant get her in the car. What can I do?

As her sister there's not too much you can do but your parents have more control. If they don't already know about your sister's problem please tell them.  Hopefully they can get her the help she needs.
That is a very difficult spot to be in. Telling your parents, if they don't already know, is helpful. But, if they force her to do something she doesn't want to do, she may run and hide from it. Good luck.
Bulimia is a disease that is something a person can "control." It is very difficult to get through to someone who is far gone in the process, so telling your parents and getting professional help would be best. There are experts who know this disease very well. Good luck!
This type of purging appears to be a condition of the mind, that affects the body. Therefore, as a sister who cares about your sister you can learn more about purging on the internet but you cannot 'treat' your sister, yourself. There are some very good treatment centres for food based 'abnormal' behaviors. Good luck in finding help for your sister. Purging must be very painful to the 'victim' and her family who watch her. letlive from Alberta
I have been researching the tainted melamine milk disaster in China for awhile. To date Chinese newspapers are saying this disaster has affected/sickened 294,000 thousand infants, caused 6 deaths. This has to be the worst tainted food case in history! Our Canadian government is now testing some 575 food products that could contain tainted milk or tainted milk-ingredients from China. Imported infant formula was banned in Oct./08 in Canada. There have been several cases in your country where melamine has been found in foodstuffs according to our Canadian Government releases. So, your government has to test for melamine as well in foodstuff. To top it off, the melamine was added on purpose to milk in China! How can the West ever trust a country with food stuffs that thinks nothing of adding plastics to milk after they watered down raw milk? Poisoning their own babies in the process? letlive in Alberta, Canada

In my experience, you can't get people to do anything unless they want to do it. A family intervention with a professional may be a beginning to get her attention. Like drugs, alcohol, and going to the dentist (I kid you not), they always wait until they bottom out.

Good luck. It's hard to watch someone you love hurt themself.
