Last night, Gregg and I decided to go out to eat at a local establishment called Café Centraal . No, I am not spelling in incorrectly-it really is spelled this way. I had high hopes for this place because I viewed the menu before we left. I saw things like fresh fruit, mussels, sweet potato fries and tofu on the menu. This type of menu is not found at just any place in Milwaukee-it has to be a special place.
Gregg and I were seated at a 4 person table, directly across from the bar. Our waitress came over and asked us what we would like to drink and I simply ordered water. However, I did sneak a peak at their drink menu to find 12 pages of beer! If this isn’t a Wisconsin Place, I don’t know what is
Upon being seated and ordering our drinks, Gregg and I viewed the appetizer selection and chose the Feta and Spinach Spread to share. This appetizer was really tasty! The bread was kind of like a thin French bread and was toasted with a little bit of butter on it. It wasn’t your traditional hot-melty cheese and spinach, this was real feta cheese, so it wasn’t melted. It had the perfect balance of cheese, spinach, sun-dried tomato and onion.
Once it was time to order our meals, there was no question of what I was going to order: The Black Bean Burger with Sweet Potato Fries. I took one look at it and knew the dish was made for me. Gregg ordered the Pan Seared Trout with Sweet Corn Succotash. I tried a little bit of the succotash and it was great! The flavors all stood out and you knew right away what was in it. But, back to my dish-technically it was called the Centraal Veggie Burger. It was a black bean cake topped with lettuce, onion, tomato and sriracha mayo all served on a butter top roll. The black bean burger had black beans, corn, rice and spices in it. It seriously was out of this world. And, the sweet potato fries-don’t even get me started. I know some people love sweet potato fries that have sugar on them, but I love spicy sweet potato fries. These fries were definitely spicy because they were topped with a spicy paprika.
This meal did not disappoint-overall, I would rate the food a 5 out of 5, but the overall experience a 4 out of 5. The service was a little off, not sure if our waitress was new, but she was very shy around us when we asked her questions about the menu. But, if this was the only downside of this place-I will take it
