My friend Mark asked me what kind of body products fit into a macrobiotic lifestyle. "What kind of deodorant, toothpaste, soap, moisturizers, etc., do you use?"
I eat a very clean macrobiotic diet because I had cancer. So ... I usually don't use deodorant because I don't typically need it. If I had heard this from someone before I ate this way, I wouldn't have believed it, so I understand if you think I'm crazy.
If you eat a diet based on plant food, your body chemistry is really different. Meat starts to decay right after it is killed and continues to decay after you eat it until it exits your body. Different type of bacteria than that of plant food. Do you get the picture? Enough said!
On to toothpaste. I like and use Jason's brand. They don't add laurel sulfate, a sudsing agent that is also a carcinogen. Welenda brand toothpastes are nice, too.
For soap, I often buy the Made in Maine brand from my health-food store.
The only moisturizer I have used on my face for the past eight years is pure aloe vera gel (I think it's 99% aloe). I usually don't need body moisturizers unless it's the middle of winter or if I've been in the sun. Then I still use the aloe vera gel or sometimes another brand.
I'll do more on the products I use — along with hair products and makeup — later.
I'm sure other people practicing macrobiotics use other things. Please let me know!
