I just discovered this great snack food at Whole Foods in the refrigerated section near the pickles and hummus (close to the produce). It attracted my attention because of the name Aisha... I have a good friend with that name. So I picked it up, read it and decided to give it a try.
So, what are Termis? The package says that they're lupine beans and that this is a "Perfect Ready To Snack Food."
On the package, Aisha says, "Ever since I was a child in Egypt I have eaten this delicious snack food. My Egyptian family recipe is the reason behind its irresistible taste. I was inspired to share Termis with the health-conscious community because of its crunchiness, unique nutty flavor & 100% natural ingredients. It has all the advantages of eating beans without the discomfort that beans can generate. It is fat free, cholesterol free and an excellent source of dietary fiber, protein, vitamin A, calcium and iron. ... I hope you live a healthier and longer life. You owe it to yourself. Read the nutrition label. BELHANA! (Enjoy!)"
I checked out the label and a half-cup serving (half the package) has 110 calories, no saturated or trans fat, low sodium (15 milligrams), 11 grams of protein. The ingredients are lupine beans, water, lemon juice and vinegar (no preservatives added). "Made with lots of love." There is also 1-800 number for questions and a Web site.
I thought this would be a great snack food for kids and teens who prefer something healthy and low fat (there are many)! I thought my daughter might like some to take up to school with her, though they do have a shelf life and need refrigeration. And they seem like a great "travel" or "airplane" food. I'll take a package along on my next trip ... just have to remember to bring a spoon!
