airport eating: blueberry yogurt, granola, banana, almonds; black coffee.
Currently, I am at my parents’ house in Connecticut, high off of four days in the Colorado mountains. I wrote this post from one of my favorite locations: the airport.
I know, it’s an odd setting in which to find joy. And in the case of a foodie and a health nut, airports leave a lot to be desired.
Take the breakfast pictured above: yesterday, I snagged an extra package of granola and a banana from the breakfast buffet at the mountain lodge my friends and I stayed at for a night. I had the almonds on hand: they are my emergency snack, living in my purse at all times. At the Denver airport, I found a coffee shop with yogurt for sale, and I tossed the four ingredients together in a plastic container given to me by the cashier at KFC.
Sweetened yogurt tends to make me gag, and I stay away from long ingredient lists as a rule – but in the airport, when my stomach is growling and the options are this or Panda Express, I’ll take the artificially colored yogurt any day.
Sitting here, sipping my coffee, eating such a cobbled-together meal with a plastic spoon, I am oddly at peace. Travel, no matter where it takes me, is my drug. I slept for just under six hours last night, but I am wired.
Walking down the moving sidewalk in search of caffeine, I read every destination on the gates my feet took me by. Portland, San Francisco, Mexico City, Frankfurt, Chennai.
This week, I spent four days in a place I had never been before. Here in the airport, the terminal that has and continues to jet me on these journeys of mine, I feel all the possibility. Sure, everything is overpriced. The seats are uncomfortable, the food is neither fresh nor particularly tasty, the sounds of screeching children abound. But without this place, I would never get to explore. I love it so, and I will happily eat mediocre airport meals again and again, as long as I continue to be able to touch down all over this big world.
I have prettier food photos and far prettier landscapes photos to share from this trip, but I thought I’d pop in with a quick iPhone post before my flight takes off. See you back east, blog world!
