A New "Fat Tax" Is Gaining Momentum

Posted by TC Patient Expert

Recently, some heavy hitters in health research and obesity prevention have stepped up support for a new form of sin tax that is gaining momentum toward a "Fat Tax" in which a levy of 1 cent per ounce would be added to soda's and soft drinks. This will lead to a 15-20% increase in the price of a bottle of coke, pepsi or other soda's. Will it help stem the obesity epidemic or save money on health care?  Read More Here

What do you think?  Will is help stem the tide of the obesity and diabetes epidemics in the U.S?  Will it help solve some of the healthcare cost issues? Is is a good preventative medicine option for a new healthcare model?

I dont buy drink or give any thing with sugar in it. or carbonated. leaches calcium from bones, and sugar make you fat. use honey. drink kombucha tea. 100 percent juice.juice carrots, and veggies and fruits. health ways.
I don't think upping the tax on soft drinks alone will do much. However, it may help with childhood obesity - if they can't afford pepsi they may not buy as much of it. The real problem is not being addressed though. It comes down to parents teaching their children how to eat right. If they go to McDonalds every night because the parent doesn't feel like cooking well, thats where the real problem stems from. Its a lifestyle thing. We create the hecticness in our lives and its up to us to prioritize. We cook big meals and freeze them for the days when we get home late and do not feel like cooking instead of ordering out. The main issue (as w/ most things I think) is Education. We need to educate our kids and society as a whole should be more involved in that.
