A Cluster of Spiders…

Posted Oct 30 2010 10:43am

I have been pretty lazy today and I love it. We drove down to the Jersey Shore to help my in-laws pack up the beach house for the winter. I didn’t wake up until 8:30, which is amazing. I don’t even know the last time I slept that long. Ah-mazing. So far I’ve eaten two meals, consisting of 1.5 pumpkin chocolate chip muffins, 1 pomegranate, a big feta, craisins, hummus salad, some Food Taste Good Sweet Potato Chips and 1 Trader Joe’s dark chocolate peanut butter cup. I’ve moved a total of 10 feet.

Have you had the TJ’s dark chocolate peanut butter cups? If not. Go buy them. Life Changing. Which is exactly I don’t keep them in my house and I only buy them for other people.

I promised you the recipe for the Spectacular Spiders…so here it goes. I’m glad you all loved them! My students were enamored by the fact that I made them myself. They want me to open up a bakery at 4 pm, so they can go after school.

Start out with the cupcakes. I made them Wednesday night and then decorated them Thursday. I always have leftover’s of sprinkles and stuff, so I’ll tell you what I used, but I have a bunch leftover. I made 36 cupcakes, but you still have to buy the same amount of supplies for any less because they come in packages, like the fruit roll ups.

You also can change the colors of the sprinkles, icing, fruit roll ups, and licorice. It’s up to you! Be creative! I used what was easiest to find at Target.

Spectacular Spiders

Ingredients

  • 24-36 cupcakes
  • 2 jars frosting, I used vanilla and chocolate
  • 1 box fruit roll ups (I used strawberry), cut into about 1/2 inch squares, 2 for each cupcake
  • 1 package Twizzler pull and peels, peeled apart, each piece cut into 3rds, 8 for each cupcake
  • 1 package mini oreos
  • 2-3 different types of sprinkles/colored sugar
  • 1 tube decorating gel (black or red)
  • 1-2 toothpicks

First ice all of the cupcakes. Then place 2 of the fruit roll up squares in the center of each cupcake, leaving room towards the front for the mini-oreo head. Pour each of the different sprinkles on a plate or bowl and roll each cupcake in one of the sprinkles so the top of each is fully covered. Next, place a small amount of frosting on the back of an oreo and stick it onto the front of the cupcake as the “head”. Using a toothpick to help, stick 4 twizzlers on each side of the cupcake, as the “spidey-legs”. (Use the toothpick to push in the twizzlers). Draw a smiley face on each oreo with the decorating gel.
