First, sugar suppresses the immune system, whereas stevia sweetener has not revealed any harmful effects on important bodily functions such as this. Researchers at Loma Linda University studied the effects of sugar on phagocytes, white blood cells in the immune system that gobble up harmful bacteria. One study showed that sugar caused the phagocytic index to drop significantly, which created a negative effect on the amount of bacteria removed by the immune system. To put it simply, the fewer harmful invaders consumed by the phagocytes, the weaker the immune system and the greater chance for disease. So, instead of risking a shutdown in the immune system, use stevia sweetener for a healthy alternative.
Second, sugar disrupts the delicate balance of minerals in a healthy body. Calcium, phosphorous, magnesium, iron and zinc are crucial minerals the body needs to function. A shortage of just one of these minerals means the entire system can be thrown out of balance. Just two teaspoons of sugar can cause micronutrients in the body to change radically, creating a dramatic shift in blood chemistry. Some mineral levels increase, some decrease, and fragile ratios are disturbed. Even a little sugar can undo the effects of consuming calcium or other mineral supplements. Stevia sweetener, on the other hand, cannot be blamed for any mineral imbalances in the body.
Third, sugar speeds up the aging process. Often, when sugar is consumed, the pancreas becomes over stimulated and secretes too much insulin. Excess insulin can cause a drop in normal blood sugar levels. Stevia sweetener has no effect on normal blood sugar levels. Low blood sugar causes hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include fatigue, memory failure, rapid heartbeat, anxiety, tremors, headaches and depression. These may sound like diseases of the elderly, but more and more young people are noticing health problems of this nature because they are ingesting too much sugar. If more people were informed they would understand that stevia sweetener is hundreds of times sweeter than sugar without the harmful side effects.
Of course, it’s hard to avoid sugar in foods today. However, stevia is gaining notoriety as a sweetener that can actually be healthy for people. So, there are ways to avoid over consumption of sugar, but it takes awareness. Beware of high fructose corn syrup, dextrose and dextrin to avoid sugar in many of the processed foods at the store today. Instead, try liquid stevia sweetener for the most benefits and the best flavor.
