In my last post we talked about foods with a high nutrient density. It is very important that you know that it is not just about what foods you eat, it is also how you consume them. Food preparation is very important because the act of cooking depletes nutrients and also creates harmful oxidants. You want to avoid cooking at high temperatures and for extended periods of time. With fruit and vegetables it is the most nutritious to eat them raw, however this isn't the most efficient way to gain nutrients from them.

Raw fruit and vegetables are very filling and aren't digested very efficiently. You need to chew thoroughly otherwise a lot of the nutrients aren't digested. Although cooking is going to depleted nutrients it is also going to allow you to get more into your diet and the nutrients from these fruit and vegetables are more easily absorbed. So although eating raw is important for optimum health, cooked vegetables is also essential for a healthy diet.


2 secrets to get maximum nutrients out of your food

When you cook foods, whether it is vegetables, meats or whatever. The best way to retain nutrients is to cook in a water-based sauce and consume it as a stew. Soup is a very good nutrient source as a lot of the nutrients that are depleted from the food during cooking, remain in the sauce of the soup.
 

1. Cook your meats in a water-based sauce

This is the most healthy way to cook your meats. Especially during frying, harmful substances such as free radicals are formed. What you need to do is put your meats in a frying pan in a water-based sauce and then cook with the lid on. This is called steam frying.
 

2. Cook your fruit and vegetables as part of a soup

As I have already mentioned, soup is very healthy. You should use green, leafy vegetables as these have the highest nutrient density and are quite difficult to eat raw. Seeing as these should make up the larger portion of your diet for good health, putting them in a soup and consuming this regularly is a very good idea.
