When I think of flax seeds my mind sometimes confuses it with pumpkin seeds. I think I get confused because the yellow flax seeds look an awful lot like pumpkin seeds. Oftentimes you see ground-up flax seeds combined with water used as an alternative to an egg in vegan baking recipes. There are also health benefits that flax seeds offer that you should think about:
1) There’s a heck of a lot of fibre stored into these little seeds.
2) Consuming flax seeds may result with a lower constipation rate because they’re easy to digest and absorb water while they pass through your colon. This means that you’ll have a more regular bowel movement.
3) Omega-3 deprived? Flax seeds are the best source of this fatty acid. Omega 3 fatty acids help to lower cholesterol and prevent clots in your arteries, which means you lower the chance of getting a stroke or heart attack.
4) By including flax seeds into your daily diet you’re also consuming a high amount of lignan, which means you will be lowering the risk of getting breast or colon cancer. Although whole grain wheat is also a source of lignan, it doesn’t compare to the amount you’ll get in flax seeds (100 times as much).
5) There will come a time in a woman’s life where menopause symptoms may interfere with your regular routine. Eating flax seeds can actually help because flax seeds are also a source of phytoestrogens, which helps decrease these symptoms.
6) When you’re feeling down, these small flat seeds might be the solution to your blues. Eating flax seeds on a regular basis might actually decrease this feeling altogether.
7) Flax seed oil is also healthy for your body. It can improve the quality of how your liver functions, speed up the healing process of any sprains or bruises and make it easier for your body to absorb calcium.
#8) The mix of omega-3 fatty acids and the high amounts of fibre in flaxseed or flaxseed oil can actually help those of you with diabetes because it gives your body the good cholesterol and it is found to keep your blood sugar levels lower than if you ate something like wheat bread.
9) Keeping flax seeds in your diet can also help keep your bones healthy, mostly because of the omega 3 found in these little seeds.
10) No one likes dry eyes, and it’s been suggested that eating flax seed oil (because of its omega-3 fatty acids) regularly can prevent that from happening.
