How many times have you read an article and it tells you to speak with your doctor about how to follow a gluten free diet? A recent Washington Post article recommends working with your doctor to follow a safe gluten free diet and ensure you are getting proper nutrition. The Natural Product Expo West magazine recommends this approach too. As important as it is to have a doctor help you understand if you have celiac disease or other medical conditions that mandate a gluten-free diet, most doctors do not understand what it takes to actually live a gluten-free lifestyle.
It is fairly safe to assume that unless a doctor or their family is gluten-free, they will not know much about the details of the diet. They can tell you what to avoid (barley, rye, oats and wheat) but not what to actually consume. Or more important, they may not be able to tell you how to eat a nutrient-dense gluten free diet for optimal health.
