I’ve been thinking a lot lately about what separates those who win at weight loss from those who don’t. For years I’ve been working to understand my own personal struggles with food, weight and body image. In the process I’ve become an avid student, taking classes, reading books, observing others, and conducting lots of experiments with myself.
What I’ve come to understand is that being successful with losing weight and keeping it off is just like being successful at anything else in life! In the final analysis it all comes down to TAKING ACTION/DOING SOMETHING.
Looking back, I realize that for years I was stuck in denial and making excuses. Eating way more than I acknowledged and moving a lot less. My family, my friends, my job, my genetics, and “slow” metabolism were just some of the excuses I used for not taking control of my life and my weight.
I’m embarrassed to admit how many “silver bullets” and “quick-fixes” I’ve fallen for from “fat burning” teas, pills, shakes, “meal-replacements” and “cleanses” to the latest “fad diet” du jour. I guess it should come as no great surprise, given the time of year, that the number 1 best-selling non-fiction book of the moment is but another diet book making fantastic promises: Shred: The Revolutionary Diet: 6 Weeks 4 Inches 2 Sizes ?
But the truth is you can read all you want, and think all you want and wish and hope all you want, and try all the quick-fixes you want, but nothing is going to happen until you actually “do something” that is real and lasting, no matter how small.
Today I encourage you to DO SOMETHING for your health and your weight that will move you toward your goal. The journey of one thousand miles does really being with a single step. So, take one little step, no matter how small:
Take one less bite of food.
Try on your exercise clothes.
Drink a glass of water before lunch.
Eat a piece of fruit with breakfast.
Take a multivitamin.
Try a new vegetable.
Pack a healthy snack for your purse/briefcase.
Toss out an unhealthy trigger food so it can’t tempt you.
Take a five minute walk after dinner.
Get to bed 30 minutes earlier.
Have your salad dressing on the side.
Order the “small” size.
Big results all being with small changes! It’s the sure path to lasting weight loss success!
