The very ironic thing about social media is that it allowed me to take a break from the modern world, which I may otherwise never have had the courage to do. I have long dreamed of thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail. I read books about it, talked about it, wrote in my journal about it, tried to recruit somebody to do the hike with me. All to no avail. Nobody was game for making such a commitment and I was too nervous to do so alone.
Well, thanks to Facebook, YouTube, and the tips and community on Whtieblaze.net, I have eased my fears and connected with other like minded people who have also dreamed of thru-hiking.
Over the past year, I have learned how to plan, had questions answered, and met some people online who I hope to meet in person on the trail.
I leave April 2nd from Springer Mountain with a smart phone and a tablet.
