The Philosopher’s Kitchen

Posted Mar 10 2010 6:13am

Eureka! I’ve finally stumbled across a cookbook that combines my love of ancient Greece with my fascination for food! In her search for authentic recipes, food historian and innovative cookbook author Francine Segan has delved into everything from Apicius’ On Cookery — written in the first century — to writings by Aristotle and Hippocrates. She modernizes the recipes with ingredients we find on the shelves today and then tests and retests to determine what the amounts/measurements should be. (Cooks in ancient times apparently didn’t find mundane things like measurements important enough to note in their recipes.) Many recipes include the original instructions as well as an accompanying cultural or culinary tidbit. Talk about a feast for the body and mind!
