I spent today sifting through old notebooks and papers from college and I realized how little of it I remember... Never fear, what I do remember from the good ol' college days is how hard it can be to prepare a great tasting, nutritious dinner for 1 without having to eat leftovers for a week! I have since found that cooking dinner for 2 can be a challenge as well. Somehow, there are always leftovers for days! I like leftovers, but only once...
An RD at work had a delicious looking lunch- dinner leftovers, she explained. Needless to say, lunch better be impressive when you work with a bunch of nutritionists...We all notice what others eat! Trying to get a glimpse into the life of a new wife, I simply had to ask if she cooked like that for her new hubby every night. To which she replied "no"; she then explained to me the best idea ever.
She and a couple of her friends have what they call a "Supper Club". One family picks a day of the week when they will cook and deliver food to the other families in their club. There are 3 families (including hers) in her Supper Club so she simply makes a larger recipe than she normally would if it were just her and her hubby. Then, she delivers the food to the other couples' doors. They do the same for her on their chosen nights, so 2 nights a week (because she has 2 others in her club) she and her husband have dinner delivered!
Her advice for your own Supper Club?
Make sure your friends live close.
Stick with families that are about the same size as yours so you don't end up making dinner for a family of 6 when there are only 2 of you (that way you don't lose money).
My advice?
I'd be sure to send them a list of dislikes so that they'd have a good idea of what not to make on the nights they deliver to my house.
Why is this the best idea ever?
You don't have to cook every. single. night.
You get to try foods that are regular dinners at your friend's house but are new to you!
It keeps you creative in the kitchen! (You wouldn't want to deliver meatloaf every week...)
You and your husband don't have to eat leftovers for an entire week just to keep food from wasting!
You get days out of the week when you eat well but didn't have to slave over the stove after work.
You'll save in groceries!
This would be such a wonderful idea for all newlywed couples! Especially if you are just learning to cook and have newlywed friends who are in the same boat! It would also be fun if you just had a baby or another major life event. Will you join my Supper Club? Have you heard of this Supper Club idea before? Have you participated?
