Steamed fish ( Bengali style )

Posted Oct 07 2008 7:07pm

Sorshe machh kola patamure
Bengali fish cooked in banana leaves

You will need

Rohu / Hilsa fish – 500 g
1/ 4 cup ( 50 g ) mustard seeds
Salt or to taste
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
2 teaspoon / 20 ml mustard oil
4 banana leaves

Clean the fish, cut into pieces and set aside. Wash mustard seeds and grind to a paste. Add just enough water to retain a paste – like consistency. Mix with salt and turmeric powder. Apply this paste and then some oil on each piece of fish. Then wrap each in a banana leaf.

Steam the wrapped fish in an idli cooker or a perforated container, placed inside a large utensil, one third filled with boiling water ( container should be above water ). Cover and leave over a low flame till the fish is cooked. Serve hot with lemon wedges and rice.
