Starting with the moment they're born we're on a journey of trust with our children. It's so much easier for them to trust us, as they start dependent on us and the trust grows from there.
As they grow, we need to trust them more and more. We want them to be able to make good choices, and we have to hope that even when they make bad ones, they won't be ones that have dire consequences.
My older son just graduated High School, my younger son's about to be a Senior, so I've given this much thought and what I had to come to terms with was not that it was difficult to trust them, but that it was difficult to trust me. Because all those lessons began and ended with me, their parent.
And the more they prove that I actually got through to them on the important issues, the more I trusted them. And me.
