Shake it up! Satisfying shakes for the dieter...and her kids

Posted Jul 03 2007 12:00am

Blender_kitI mentioned in my Cool Stuff for Dieters and Brown Baggers post that I got a Fit & Fresh Power Shaker since I've been making lots of smoothies on the Extreme Fat Smash plan. My son is using it as much as me since I've been making him banana-vanilla yogurt shakes.

(Just yesterday his grandma noticed how he's filling out. Maybe it's the whey protein in the shakes? Or could it be the 4-5 classes of karate, 2-3 hours of baseball each week, and the fact that at seven he's a growing boy?)

But I didn't tell you that I got a chrome, 16-speed Oster blender (kind of like this brushed steel one on Amazon) at Costco. I was really tired of looking at that ugly, gross brown and tan plastic blender I've had since the '80s and it was time to upgrade.

Not only is the Oster good looking, it doesn't leak, has a large glass pitcher which is easy to clean, the blade is very sharp, and it has a pulsing/ice crushing feature which is very important when making smoothies with frozen fruit or ice.

Here are two that I make on a regular basis on the Extreme Fat Smash diet:

Mixed Berry Smoothie
Makes 2 servings

Berries_in_blenderIngredients:

  • 4 oz. Ice Cubes
  • 1-1/2 cups Fresh Red Raspberries
  • 1-1/2 cups Blueberries

Directions:

  1. Blend berries and ice to make smoothie.

You can make it with frozen berries - I've been using organic frozen ones that I bought at Costco. But add 1-2 cups water or skim milk and omit the ice. And be prepared to stop the blender and squish the berries down like in the picture. Since they're frozen, you're making more of a sorbet and less of a shake. Adding water or milk helps liquify the frozen mass.
