Red Velvet Trifle Recipe

This is the dessert you are looking for.  

The dessert you are trying to think of, to make for someone special for Valentine’s Day.

Erika picked out this dessert for us to make for Kara’s shower and I am so glad she did.  We know Kara loves red velvet cake and we thought this would be more fun than cupcakes.

It’s not light or low-fat.  It’s decadent and delicious.  Perfect for a treat!

You could always make it in a large clear glass trifle bowl instead of individual dishes! 

Red Velvet Trifle

Cake 
  

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon fine salt
  • 2 teaspoons cocoa powder
  • 1 1/4 cups vegetable oil
  • 1 cup buttermilk, at room temperature
  • 2 eggs, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons red food coloring 
  • 1 teaspoon white distilled vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Cream Cheese Whip Cream, recipe follows
Vanilla Pudding – make as directed.  (you could use instant or cook)

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Spray a 9×13 pan with cooking spray.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder. 
  3. In a stand mixer, mix together the oil, buttermilk, eggs, food coloring, vinegar, and vanilla.
  4. Add the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients until smooth batter is formed.
  5. Pour the prepared cake into the pan. Bake until cooked – about 30 minutes.
  6. Let the cake cool. While the cake is cooking and cooling, make the pudding and frosting. 
  7. When cake is cooled.  Break cake into pieces and layer in the bottom of a trifle dish.  
  8. Add a layer of vanilla pudding. 
  9. Add another layer of cake – repeat if there is room + ingredients. 
  10. Top with Cream Cheese Whip Cream!  
Cream Cheese Whip Cream 
  • 1 block of cream cheese – could be 1/3 less fat
  •  1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 1.5 c. heavy cream
  1. In a small bowl beat whipping cream until stiff peaks form; set aside.
  2. In another bowl beat cream cheese, sugar, salt and vanilla.
  3. Add cream cheese mixture into whipped cream.  
  4.  Mix until smooth, then fold in whipped cream.
