Pro’s and Con’s of Cleansing

Today I have a guest post for you written by Brittany. Brittany writes about healthy living and fitness on behalf of Healthy Choice. For more information about low calorie meals and healthy desserts , check out www.healthychoice.com .

Winter is finally starting to wind down. But as we begin to shed or coats and winter boots, we must prepare ourselves mentally and emotionally for the most dreaded time of year for women everywhere: swimsuit season. Don’t get me wrong, I’m an L.A. native living in Chicago; there’s nothing I look forward to more than the first signs of spring. Still, the thought a string bikini gives me some neuroses about the coming spring and summer seasons.

Many people find themselves in a similar predicament, whether they’ve cut back their normal exercise routine, ate a little too much through the holidays, or just went into full blown hibernation mode with the first signs of snow. Now is about the time people step up their health and fitness routines, and I mean far beyond subbing ranch with balsamic vinaigrette. Cleansing has become a very popular method for detoxing. Cleansing can be a very effective way to revitalize your body and kick start a healthier routine. However, there are several disadvantages that come along with it. If you’ve been contemplating a cleanse, check out this list of pros and cons first.

Benefits of Cleansing:
1. Weight Loss. This is probably the most popular reason for completing cleanses. Most cleanses are relatively strict, requiring you to cut processed foods, refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol and sometimes most meat.
2. Feeling Rejuvenated. Taking a hiatus from toxins can make you feel pretty refreshed. Cleanses usually take quite a bit of dedication, but properly completing a healthy cleanse can leave you feeling energized.
3. Reduced Cravings. Some advocates of cleanses claim that removing processed foods from your diet for a prolonged period of time may help eliminate cravings.
4. Feeling Motivated. Completing a cleanse is likely to motivate you to follow up with a healthy regimen. Keep in mind that it’s very important to consider the long term when planning a cleanse. It’s important that you consider permanent changes to your eating habits once the cleanse is over; otherwise you may experience some undesirable consequences.

Disadvantages of Cleansing:

1. Most Cleanses Are Fad Diets. The sad and unfortunate truth is that the vast majority of “cleanses” are extreme fad diets in disguise. Oftentimes they are simply low-calorie, short term solutions to lose weight that are extremely difficult to stick to. These diets can actually be very dangerous.
2. Temporary Weight Loss: Weight loss is usually from fluid and muscle loss. When you resume eating your normal diet, your body now has less muscle mass to burn calories, and converts them to fat. This is why a significant number people tend to gain the weight back.
3. Lack of Important Nutrients. Oftentimes, cleanses require you to cut out entire food groups, but in the process you miss out on some key nutrients that your body needs. This holds particularly true for juice cleanses. Juicing fruits and veggies removes the majority of the fiber from the fruit. Fiber aids in the digestive fiber, and deficient amounts of fiber can lead to unpleasant side effects.
4. Symptoms and Side Effects. Symptoms of cleanses may include (but are not limited to): feeling light headed or weak, fatigue, irritability, headaches and digestive distress. This is why many cleanses recommend that you complete them over a weekend.
5. Your Liver Is On Top Of Things. One thing people seem to forget is that our organs already detoxify our bodies for us, and they do a pretty good job of it. Taking a break from toxins like alcohol, tobacco, and heavily processed products will definitely do your body some good, but it isn’t necessary to sacrifice solid food entirely.

Don’t diet, live healthy!

Have you ever done a cleanse?

Is it something you want to do, or have thought about doing?
I personally could not do one, a hungry Kaitlin is a crabby one!
