While in Japan, Koko and I saw a wonderful show on Japanese TV featuring unlikely-looking restaurants with spectacular food. Pollo Poblano, 204 New Main St, Yonkers NY 10701 could easily have been featured (if it wasn’t in Yonkers instead of Shinjuku!). Its decor is sub-minimal, looking like a half-out-of-business deli with a combination charcoal grill and juice bar, in a down-at-the-heels corner across from Yonkers City Hall. The place is oxymoronic at first impression - but the food is amazing. The sign itself is an example – while the name of the place is Pollo Poblano (and also according to the menu inside), the awning shouts “Pollos Al Carbon.”
An examination of the lit menu high on the wall shows an apparently limited selection:
We were informed that the combinations were take-out only. Thinking about this, it’s tantamount to telling a customer “if you order this, you’ll have to leave!.” After we got over the giggles, we thought maybe it was just a language thing. Ordering #1 from the regular menu below accomplished the same thing.
The take-out menu contains the full story:
There are a few reasons why the food is so great, the first being that the place is owned by Tacos El Poblano , my favorite Mexican restaurant in Yonkers. Another is the wood grill:
I’m looking forward to trying the pernil – and the whole grilled rabbit ($45) soon!
