Organize Your Digital Photos {28 Days to De-Clutter}

Posted Feb 18 2013 10:05pm
We’re moving on to more office de-cluttering today, but this task is not perhaps as obvious as some of the others. Today, we’re going to de-clutter some digital property, namely digital photos. If you’re keeping up with these challenges, join our  28 Days to De-Clutter Facebook Event page  and share your excitement with the rest of us as you accomplish each task! If you’re just joining us now, you can .

In the old days (like 5 years ago), people had to worry about de-cluttering their piles of pictures and organizing them into albums and scrapbooks. Nowadays, if it doesn’t get on Facebook or Instagram, nobody ever even sees the durn things. What’s the point of being able to take pictures anywhere with any device if nobody ever gets to enjoy them? Today, we’re going to make our pictures organized and accessible for years to come!

Before you begin, you’re going to have to find your photos. More than likely, they’re stored on memory cards (which are scattered hither and yon if you’re anything like me) or directly on your device (like your smart phone), so gather the memory cards and phones and tablets and let’s get started. Set your timer for 10 minutes, and…

BEGIN!

What we’re aiming for here is putting all the photos in one central place. A desk top or laptop is the ideal place to start, so these instructions will assume that you have one of those.

  1. On your computer, create a file for Photos if it doesn’t have one already. Then you’re going to create multiple folders within that file as you upload the photos you have on your memory cards and devices.
  2. One at a time, insert your memory cards or USB cables into the appropriate slots on your computer and view the files you have located there. Once you can see which photos are on each card, create new folders in your Photo file. I like to label mine by the season and year (Winter 2013, for example, or Spring 2010). Or if you only take pictures at major events, label the folders accordingly (So-And-So’s Wedding, June 2012).
  3. Grab and drop the photos into the newly created folder.
  4. Continue the process until all photos are uploaded.
Ready for more? Read on!

  • I recommend creating a hard copy of all these photos in addition to storing them on your computer. Copy each folder onto a CD and label it with a Sharpie. My  28 Days to De-Clutter Pinterest Board  has some great ideas for storing those CD’s in small, compact spaces.
  • What good are photos hidden away on computers, memory cards, and CD’s?! My absolute favorite way to showcase photos is by ordering photo books from Shutterfly whenever they have a sale. Way faster than scrapbooking myself – and I think cheaper and more durable in the long run as well.
  • No time even for that? Invest in a digital photo frame (this one is $30) . We have one that my DH bought on clearance a while back. To be honest, I don’t keep it up to date like I should, but whenever I do upload new pics (and videos, too!) my kids absolutely love watching the photos. Guests enjoy it, too!
  • Another favorite way to share photos is to download the free SmileBox software. You can create digital scrapbooks, invitations, slide shows, and more with your digital photos! Smilebox is very flexible –  you can print your creations, share them online, send them via email or just save them to your computer.

If you completed today’s 10-minute task, I’d love to hear about it! Tell me all about it – and show me a picture – on the 28 Days to De-Clutter Facebook Event page . Bloggers can grab the badge below and write a post – I’ll link to it in my next post and pin it to my 28 Days to De-Clutter Pinterest Board , and share on Facebook and Twitter.  And everyone can join in on the Twitter conversation by using the hashtag #28daystodeclutter .
