New Year’s resolutions: saving money on groceries with SavingStar

While going through the coupon inserts in Sunday’s newspaper, I could see how companies are responding to people’s New Year’s resolutions. They think we’ll be trying to lose weight, improve our dental health, take our vitamins, and stock up on laundry and paper products. But how about making saving money with grocery coupons less of a hassle?
Well, one of my New Year’s resolutions here at This Mama Cooks! On a Diet is to help my readers save money on their grocery bills in 2012. That’s why I decided to introduce you to SavingStar , a new service that makes it easy to save money on your groceries without clipping coupons. Instead, it’s all done by registering your grocery and loyalty cards online.
Join SavingStar at www.SavingStar.com for free. You can either use an email address or login with your Facebook account. You’ll get an email confirmation. Make sure you click on the link to confirm your account.
Then register your grocery and drugstore loyalty cards on SavingStar. SavingStar works with over 100 chains in 24,000 stores nationwide. I was able to register my local grocery store by typing in the number on my loyalty card.
Go to SavingStar and pick the eCoupons you want. They’ll link them to all of your registered store cards.
You can then have the list emailed to you or you can print it out. Also, note that the coupons can only be used once and do have an expiration date.
To make it even easier to use, download the SavingStar app on your iPhone or Android phone . Then login and check out SavingStar’s eCoupons while you’re at the store.
When you use your card at checkout, your savings are automatically added to your SavingStar account within two to 30 days depending on when the store sends the purchase data to SavingStar. Note: the savings are not given at checkout in the store and they are not printed on your receipt.
Once your accumulated savings in your SavingStar account reach $5, you can pick your payout from a deposit into your bank or PayPal account, an Amazon gift card, or a donation to American Forests.
SavingStar eCoupons are updated each week, usually on Thursdays. When I checked this week, I saw coupons for healthy products like Truvia and V8 V-Fusion Juice. There were also coupons for personal care products like Dove Men+Care body and face wash, Scott Bath Tissue, and GUM Crayola Kids Toothbrushes.
This week’s savings for me would be $2.75 for the three items I was interested in. If I use SavingStar once a week and average $3 a week, that’s a savings of over $150 a year. SavingStar will be adding more coupons and stores, which will result in even better savings.
