My First Time at the Barre: Barre54 Class

Posted Nov 11 2011 10:17pm

Back in my college days, when I first discovered what the word “gym” actually meant, it took a lot of courage for me to even walk through the doors.  There was a slim chance I was going to get adventurous and decide to try out new group classes, machines, exercises, etc. once I was inside.  I always played it safe on the elliptical, or the occasional DARK spin class.

Now, I enjoy trying all kinds of new things at the gym.  I guess it helps that I’m no longer surrounded by sorority girls in sports bras and full make-up, huh? These days, my gym buddies are of the elderly persuasion :) .

A few weeks ago, I bought a LivingSocial deal for 5 classes at Barre54 .  I was so excited when I saw the deal, because I have heard so many great things about these ballet-influenced workouts.  Lots of celebrities are fans of the workout, like Kelly Ripa.

I was a little nervous when I first walked in, but the staff was immediately very friendly and made me feel at ease.

The class ended up being very small- just me and 2 other ladies- but that ended up being great, because it almost felt like a personal training session.

The room was very spacious, and I immediately noticed the barres lining the room.

I set up my station:

A mat, light free weights, and a small Voit ball.

We started off with a warm-up, and then went immediately into some core work.  We then moved into some upper body moves with light free weights and repetitive movements, similar to BodyPump, and then basically the rest of the class was dedicated to the lower body- specifically, the boo-tay.

Things really got serious once we moved from the mat to the barre, and utilized the straps that were hanging from them.

I had a little trouble mastering some of the moves, but the instructor came over and gave me some one-on-one assistance, which was really helpful.  My butt was screaming by the end of that part of the workout!

After we were done at the barre, we moved back to the mat for more core work, and then a cool down.

I wasn’t expecting to sweat during the class, but I definitely was.  At the end, I felt like I had a great workout and was able to target muscles that don’t see the light of day in my usual BodyPump routine.

If you’re looking for a fun new workout that focuses on strengthening and stretching the body, I highly recommend Barre54 or any other barre-style class in your area!  It’s worth it!

As for me, I’ll be going back tomorrow :) .
