Meen Barthadu / Fried Mackerels ( Coorg Cuisine )

Serves - 4
Time required – 20 minutes plus marinating time

Ingredients

12 mackerels , cleaned , washed and slit lengthwise
5 ½ teaspoon chilli powder
1 ½ teaspoon thick tamarind paste
Salt to taste
1 ½ teaspoon turmeric powder
Oil for frying


Method

Place the fish in a flat tray. Mix all the remaining ingredients together , except the oil, and coat the fish with the marinade. Set aside for an hour, to allow the marinade to fully penetrate the fish.

Heat the oil in a flat frying pan. When the oil is hot , gently place the fish in the pan and shallow fry on both sides till brown and crisp. Remove from fire and serve hot with rice.
