Veggie burgers!. Veggie burgers on wheat bread are my favorite. I'll eat those at picnics with friends who are eating regular burgers, and I don't really feel like I'm missing out.
One of the best, in my opinion, is Boca Burgers cheeseburger-tastes just like the real thing, but it's much healthier. Fruit desserts are always a hit too.
Eat Before I Go. You can always have a nice green leafy salad before you go.
I take lots of water with me because being hydrated is important. I bring a whole watermelon, grapes and natural cookies. What also is fun is homemade ice cream. Sure you have the sugar content, but you can add fresh berries. Yum! Natural hot dogs (tofu) and whole wheat bun is a great alternative as well. There are some chips that are considered healthy too. Don't forget the sunblock!
After the picnic when you come home, squeeze a lemon or lime in purified water and drink it in one sitting. Brush your teeth and you will feel refreshed.
Healthy spinach dip. As a potluck item, I always bring spinach dip to picnics. I use the recipe that's on the back of the knorr vegetable seasoning packet. You use one packet, 1 cup mayo (I use fat free), and 16 ozs of sour cream (I use fat free), a package of frozen, chopped spinach, a can of water chestnuts, diced. Mix it all together and let chill for a couple of hours. Makes a large amount, is pretty healthy, yummy, and can be served with baby carrots for dipping.
A little of a lot. One other trap about BBQs is that there is SO much food. Usually there are tons of great, unhealthy tasty foods. One idea is to take just a little of a lot. Don't restrict yourself from any of them, but only do one spoonful, for example, of each. That way, you don't feel deprived, you get a taste but don't overindulge. Then, go get active and stay away from the food serving area!
Healthy Recipes. I have a great recipe for Apple Coleslaw on the site. It's absolutely delicious and is low fat. I also added some posts about different things to put on kebabs. Just use the search feature to find them.

Does anyone have any ideas on healthy picnic alternatives to vie with the fatty potato salad and burger meals most cook-outs entail?
