How I Keep My Purse Clutter-Free {28 Days to De-Clutter}

Posted Feb 27 2013 12:01am
Today is the last day for our de-cluttering challenge! Yippee! Tomorrow’s post will wrap everything up and give you some inspiration going forward. Yesterday’s post was about de-cluttering your car , and today’s post… is de-cluttering your purse.  If you’re keeping up with these challenges, join our  28 Days to De-Clutter Facebook Event page  and share your excitement with the rest of us as you accomplish each task! If you’re just joining us now, you can .

I HATE (notice the capital H-A-T-E) clutter in my purse. Nothing drives me more bonkers than having to dig through piles of trash and what-not to get to my keys or my phone. Years ago, I hit upon a simple solution that keeps my purse clutter-free all the time. For those of you who like to lug around your massive designer handbags, it might not be the solution you’re looking for… but it works for me!

Set your timer for 10 minutes, and…

BEGIN!

Turn your purse upside down and empty everything onto the floor or counter.

The first thing to do is get rid of all the trash: receipts, expired coupons, gum wrappers, etc.

Then look at the rest of your pile of stuff and decide what really needs to be in your purse on a regular basis. For me, that’s:

  • wallet
  • phone
  • keys
  • lip balm/gloss
  • nail file
  • pen
  • loyalty cards (most of which are on my keychain or in my wallet)

Everything else has to go somewhere else. Nothing else is allowed in my purse. And to keep it that way, I only use small purses. Exclusively! For the last few months, I experimented with some slightly larger purses (which would probably still seem rather small to some of you!), but once again, I got so irritated by all the junk that collected in there, that I’ve again reverted to my tried-and-true solution. My little purse. I love it!

Whatever the size of your purse, determine what absolutely needs to be in it, and place those items back in your bag.

Pictured here is my favorite size of purse and the one I’m currently using. It’s just big enough to hold the aforementioned items, and it’s small enough to tuck under my arm when I’m carrying it (my two requirements).

  •  It’s time for purse-shopping! Want to know a secret? I always buy my purses at thrift stores. Always. I frankly don’t care if they’re designer or not; I only care if they’re the right size, are in good condition, and relatively stylish (I don’t really go for trendy, though. Classic is more my style!). If you think having a smaller purse would help control the clutter, then go purse hunting!
  • Have so many purses you don’t know what to do? My first suggestion would be to pare down your collection. Over the past few years, I’ve purged mine repeatedly until I now have 3 purses. I want to be at the place where I have one at a time, because I only use one at a time (I don’t switch them out for different outfits – way too much work for me!). But if you can’t get quite that bare-bones, check out my 28 Days to De-Clutter Pinterest Board  for purse storage ideas.

If you completed today’s 10-minute task, I’d love to hear about it! Tell me all about it – and show me a picture – on the 28 Days to De-Clutter Facebook Event page . Bloggers can grab the badge below and write a post – I’ll link to it in my next post and pin it to my 28 Days to De-Clutter Pinterest Board , and share on Facebook and Twitter.  And everyone can join in on the Twitter conversation by using the hashtag #28daystodeclutter .
