Honeymoon Recap: Sandals Grande Antigua – Room & First Day!!…

Posted Nov 15 2012 7:13am

Hi there!  I am beyond the point of being excited to finally share honeymoon recaps with all of you!  Our honeymoon was truly one of the best experiences I have ever been on.  I’m thinking that my recaps are only going to take a few days and I’m hoping to finish them by this weekend and not drag them out as long as I did with our wedding recaps.  I apologize for that.  So let’s get to it, shall we?!

When deciding on a honeymoon, Mike and I knew that we wanted to go somewhere tropical.  We just weren’t sure where.  We knew we wanted all-inclusive and we both really had our hearts set on a Sandals Resort.  We both wanted to go to St. Lucia but the airfare was beyond the point of expensive and there was no way we could manage that.  We then thought about Jamaica but we felt like we were settling.  So we decided to go to a travel agent to see if they could offer some insight.  Originally years ago, we always talked about going to Antigua and then we sort of forgot about it.  The travel agent showed us that at Sandals, they only have one resort in Antigua and the pictures looked gorgeous.  The airfare was cheaper and we ended up getting an amazing deal!  So Antigua it was!

Our wedding was over at 12am.  We didn’t actually leave the venue until well after 1am, maybe closer to 2am.  By the time we got home, and unloaded my car from all of our wedding stuff, it was around 3am.  We needed to get to the airport by 5am and the airport was a good hour away.  We didn’t sleep the entire night.  We finished packing our bags and took off for the airport sleep deprived but filled with so much excitement because we had just gotten married!  I didn’t even bother to take my hair out or take off my makeup.  I threw on a tank top that I had made that said, “Just Married” and we were ready to go!  We left from Newark, NJ because that was the only direct flight to Antigua.  It is rather difficult to get a direct flight there and that is what we wanted.  So we left from Newark.

Ready to go on our honeymoon!

Finally on the plane!

It took about 4 hours to get to Antigua and we were so excited once we landed!  We were picked up at the airport and brought to our resort Sandals Grande Antigua !

Sandals Grande Antigua! The most romantic resort.

The butler manager gave us champagne and escorted us to our room. We found out that we had been upgraded!  We did book a butler room and we were upgraded to the Mediterranean building into a penthouse!!!  Talk about a honeymoon surprise!  We couldn’t believe it.

Once we were settled in the room, we met one of our three butler’s, Natasha.  She gave us an overview of everything.  She booked restaurant reservations for us, a spa treatment, made arrangements for the pool and beach, etc.  She did everything!  She was our main butler.  We were given a cell phone to communicate with them while on the resort.  They would call us and we would call them for anything that we needed.  They were beyond the point of nice and would do anything to make your stay more enjoyable.  It was great interacting with them because we got to know them pretty well and they got to know us.  We were so sad when we had to say goodbye.  They would often show up with random surprises in our room which I will get to in another post. It was exciting to come back to the room and see what they did for us.

We were both so hungry once we got settled so she walked us to an outdoor dining area for lunch.

Roasted Red Pepper Hummus with pita as an appetizer. This became our favorite snack to eat by the pool.

My chicken quesadilla..also became a favorite.

Mike’s caesar wrap

The food was great and gave us a wonderful first impression of what was yet to come!  We decided to get changed and head to the pool for a little bit.  We were still running on fumes at this point but we wanted to enjoy our honeymoon and live in the moment.  After the pool, we got ready to head to dinner at Mario’s, the Italian restaurant at the resort.

I ordered Lobster and Shrimp Risotto

Mike ordered steak

This restaurant has the BEST dessert on property!  It is the Chocolate Lava Cake and we made numerous stops throughout our honeymoon just to eat this cake!  It was heavenly!!!

Our first day was absolutely incredible!  We knew that we made the right choice staying at Sandals and traveling to Antigua.  I’ve heard so many mixed things about Sandals so I was nervous.  You either love it or you hate it.  There is no middle ground.  I am so happy to say that we LOVE Sandals!  We would both go back in a heartbeat!  I cannot wait to share the rest of our honeymoon with you.  We took some amazing pictures, had incredible food, saw a beautiful island and met some great people.  Antigua is absolutely stunning!  You will see that once you see more pictures from our honeymoon.  It is a miniature St. Lucia and it really is one of the most romantic places let alone most romantic resort.

Have you ever been to an all-inclusive resort?

Stay tuned tomorrow for more of our honeymoon recap!  Happy Thursday!
