Today is a day of celebration… a day to rejoice over our mothers. It’s also a day for mothers to bask in the beauty of being a mother and praise God for the gift of children she has been given.
Today I rejoice that I have a beautiful mother, Lois. She is a woman who has been following Jesus for over 70 years. She has endured much trial and heartache since having to place my father in a nursing home and yet she has come through with dignity and beauty. She has adopted those people in the nursing home and loving on each one of them, bringing joy to their limited world. My mother has loved me tenderly for 50+ (!) years. She loves her grandchildren and great grandchildren with an unconditional love, covering each of them in pray every day.
Today I celebrate being a mother. I am blessed to have been given three sons. I also have a child in heaven waiting to meet his or her family! I am so deeply grateful and can’t imagine having gone through life without each and every one of my precious children. Thank-you boys for bringing me so much joy and happiness. I love you more than life itself!
Today I think of women who have a barren womb... who have never had children but so desperately desire them. I know just a touch of that pain and I hurt for you. May God strengthen your heart and give you joy and peace on this day. Don’t ever quit believing that He has a perfect plan for you!
Today I think of women who have lost babies or pregnancies... I remember when I was carrying our second child and I was told he/she had died in my womb. I had deep and unexplained grief knowing I would never mother that child outside the womb. I pray if that is any of you, please know that you are indeed a mother to that child and that God chose you to fearfully and wonderfully create that beautiful child. You will always be their mother.
Today I think of women who have lost children... This special day can be a day of grieving when you’re missing a child. That empty chair is so evident. May you feel the gentle mercies of God as you experience that familiar pain.
Today I think of men and women… children even… who have lost their mothers. My mother is still living and I can’t imagine life without her. I pray God will give you sweet memories today of the one who nurtured and cared for you.
Today I think of men and women who have never had a mother love them. May the knowledge of God’s love for you be enough to give you comfort on this day. Knowing the faithful love of a heavenly Father can carry you through these painful days.
Today I think of children who are being abused and neglected by their mothers. May you always remember that God loves you with an everlasting love. Lean on Jesus and let Him give you the courage you need to endure and faithfully pray for deliverance.
Today I think of mothers who are hurting because their child has turned their back on her love or God’s love. May you be given peace knowing God’s love for your child. Keep praying diligently for repentance. God is a God of changed lives!
Today I think of mothers who have made mistakes (and we all do) and are seeing the consequences of their poor choices … Mother’s day threatens to be a reminder of your errors. God can take our sin and turn it into a time of restoration and beauty. Confess and turn from that sin today.
Today I think of children who desire to honor their mothers but their mothers aren’t interested in their love. I pray you will have the strength to keep loving and that the unconditional love you faithfully offer will change and soften their heart.
So on this Mother’s Day in 2011, if you’re celebrating , do it with rejoicing! And if you’re saddened , there is hope through Jesus Christ. And if you’re able , share the Good News of the Bible. It’s only in Jesus that there is true healing, absolute hope and abundant joy!
Whatever your story… Happy Mother’s Day. May the peace of God fill your heart.
