Glorious Breakfast in Namma Chennai

Chennai has one of the largest choices for breakfast in the country. A few decades back, breakfast in Chennai household meant idlis and dosas with chutney and dry chutney powder as the first meal of the day. The more westernised families had cereal, porridge, toast and fried eggs.

The present scenario consists of mainly native items like idli, dosa, vada, uttapam, pongal and sevai.

For a good start to your day, you need breakfast - a - good breakfast, at that. The morning meal keeps one healthy and healthy all day long. And, when in Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, believe me, you cannot afford to miss this meal, for reasons beyond health. Of course, I’m referring to taste, with the huge and mouthwatering variety on offer in the city.

Breakfast in Chennai makes for an exceptional meal, especially as the menu is so remarkable in its variety. First and foremost, Chennai wakes up to filter coffee - the aroma of ground coffee seed seeping through the filter and into the tumbler is an experience in divinity by itself. ( Not that Chennaites don’t visit coffee houses for a cup of cappuccino, but it is filter coffee... literally giving a great start to the day as well as one’s mood ).

Pongal, Vada & Idli with chutneys

Some foods are simly divine and '' Pongal '' belongs to that category. Pongal is the creamy and luxurious rice dish that is prepared by cooking rice with toasted moong dal and a little ghee, adding lots of water, sometimes milk and seasoning it with cumin, black peppercorns and salt. The whole mix is cooked in a big vessel/ pot until the rice and dal become tender, with roasted cashew nuts sprinkles as a garnish. This simple and lip - smacking dish has a strong fragrance that permeates the surroundings with its wonderful aroma. Pongal with coconut chutney and sambar makes for a perfect Tamil breakfast.
