There are some things we consider obvious toxins to our bods- plastic water bottles, cigarettes, McJunk junk food - but did you know that many shoes you sport on your sweet little feet can also be toxic? Many plastic shoes- especially those ratatatty flip flops we sport around all summer- not only expose our feet to environmental pollutents, but contain some gross production materials. One example are Phthalates, a chemical added to soften plastic and add flexibility. The problem? Phthalates have some huge health risks associated with them- infertility, testicular and breast cancer, endocrine disruption, and ADHD to name a few. The ickiest part of all is that these flip flops, clogs, flats and other shoes made with this (and other) plastic additives won't help mama earth when they get tossed and added to our landfills. Unfortunately, despite Phthalates being fazed out in North American and Europe, many large scale shoe manufacturers are still using materials that are questionable for our health and for the planet.
