Germany and Barcelona Highlights

Posted Jun 06 2013 9:49am

Well today will be my last post on my vacation, it is really hard to capture 2 weeks of travel into just a few posts but I figured the best way to do this is to highlight my favorite things about my trip.

1.) Running while on vacation. It made me more comfortable with the areas that I was staying in. I felt like I really got to know the “morning life and see things I might not notice just walking around.

2.) Going to a concentration camp. While In Berlin I made the trip to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Learning about the Holocaust has always been something that really interested me, I took a Holocaust in film class in college and have read countless books about it. I knew it was something that I had to do. The whole experience was really sad, and humbling.

3.) Visiting my friend in Munster.

Teresa has visited me and my family twice now and I have gotten the opportunity to show her around Fairfield and even dragged her to Rochester, NY last year. It was really nice to see her University, they cute area that she lives in and meet all of her friends. Its nice to visit a new place and see it through the eyes of a local rather then as a tourist.

4.) Gaudi! All of the Gaudi in Barcelona was amazing! After each exhibit we saw Laura and I kept asking each other which was our favorite. I am pretty sure the Batllo was my favorite but it really is hard to say, his architectural style was soo unique.

Fun fact/Sad Fact the last project Gaudi was working on was La Sagrada Familia , on his way to work he was struck by a bus and died. It took people a few days to identify his body. The church to this day has not been finished and I don’t think it ever will be finished.

5.) A walking tour of Berlin. We booked the tour through NewBerlinTours.com (I booked my concentration camp tour with them as well, if you are traveling abroad I highly recommend them, they are offered in several different areas). The tour was free. It was pouring rain during the tour but our tour guide did a great job of keeping us entertained and made sure we saw all of the important things. The thing I was looking forward to see the most was the Holocaust Memorial.

6.) Visiting Lindau and seeing where my friend grew up. Although it rained a bit when we were there it was nice to see her Island. Not to mention you could see Germany, Austria and Switzerland while standing in one spot.

7.) Eating delicious food, as I mentioned yesterday .
