today’s post comes from the awesomesauce Dani- enjoy!
Hi Friends! My name is Dani and I blog at Dani Delicatessen . I am an ex-ballet dancer turned dietetics undergrad, and am currently in my third year at a university in Vermont.
After seeing that Carrie was looking for some guest posts I thought I’d share one of my favorite things with you all…farmer’s markets! My friends and I go every Saturday rain or shine and I hope that after this post you’ll see why!
Top Three Reasons Why You Should Love Farmers Markets
1) Fresh Produce- There’s nothing like buying your veggies and fruits, still slightly covered in dirt right?! But really-I love knowing where and who my produce came from. To be able to directly ask what has been sprayed on them and when they were picked is invaluable. Not to mention you feel connected with the farmer as you know you are immediately supporting them.
2) Breads!- You know how you can tell if a bread is made with all real foods? If it molds fairly quickly. Sad-but true. Last year I bought a loaf of bread from the farmer’s market and stupid me forgot to put it in the freezer. Needless to say within 4 days it had started to mold. Although I was definitely bummed I realized I should appreciate the fact that those farmers didn’t put additional, questionable, preservatives in it. At almost all markets the bread is baked fresh daily, and you can definitely taste the difference between that and the store bought kind.
3) Unique Foods- Blueberry Peach Jam anyone? Or how about Maple Ginger Nut Butter complete with pecans, almonds, and cashews? Yeah-now I have your attention ; ) Farmers Markets are a great place to see people’s creativity in the kitchen. Whether it’s prepared foods like samosas and sweets, or pantry items like nut butter, jams, or cranberry relish-You will be amazed at what other people come up with!
So as the weekend approaches I encourage everyone to head out to their farmer’s market to support the locals and fill your kitchen with delicious foods. : )
